Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to specify guidelines for the requirements and goals stipulated by Lerøy Seafood Group (Lerøy) for finished feed and feed raw materials, in terms of environmental, social and financial sustainability.
Valid for
This policy applies to all employees who carry out work involving fish feed at Lerøy.
Definitions
Lerøy covers all wholly or partly owned subsidiaries and collaborating companies within fish feed purchases.
Framework and principles
Lerøy's feed suppliers and their follow-up of subcontractors, with a particular focus on human rights and decent working conditions, must at all times comply with Lerøy's Supplier Code of Conduct.
Marine raw materials must come from responsibly regulated fisheries where each species is regulated in accordance with national and international authorities' regulations and quotas given in accordance with scientific recommendations (HI, ICES, FAO, IMARPE, CERNAPESCA, etc.). None of the species can be on the UN list of endangered species (CITES convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora) or classified as critically endangered or endangered on the IUCN red list.
Suppliers must be certified by the current ASC feed-standard. All feed delivered to Lerøy must be produced in compliance with ASC-feed standards regardless of production site certification status. Lerøy requires that 100% of wild-caught whole fish, except legally landed bycatch, must be certified in accordance with the applicable ASC requirements and Lerøy will deny procurement of marine raw materials from whole fish that lose certification/participation in relevant FIP (Fishery Improvement Program).
Vegetable raw materials must come from productions that take place on land areas that have been acquired for this purpose in a sustainable manner. The supplier must not use suppliers who use burning/razing of rain forest/mangrove forest. Vegetable raw materials must be certified according to an internationally approved standard for sustainability where this exists/is relevant.
If soy is to be used in the feed, it must come from producers with full traceability through the value chain, as well as suppliers who have set a cut-off date in relation to deforestation (Brazil). All soy from Brazil must be ProTerra certified.
When evaluating new raw materials that do not naturally fall into the above categories, a comprehensive sustainability evaluation must be carried out and there must be a written internal report, supported by documentation from the producers. Lerøy has made an active choice regarding the establishment of new sources of feed raw materials and will continue to be a driving force for the development of new circular feed raw materials. These raw materials do not need to be fully certified at the time of use.
All raw materials must be included in a traceability system so that there is always an overview of which raw materials have been used and where the feed containing these raw materials has been used.
The feed must at all times satisfy the group's various certifications for aquaculture, mainly ASC production and Global GAP.
Lerøy has a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the value chain. Raw materials for fish feed are a strong driver in relation to greenhouse gas emissions and Lerøy therefore wants to prioritize raw materials that contribute to achieving our climate goal.
