Redd Barna - Save the Children Norway

Since 2017, Lerøy has been a proud partner of Redd Barna - Save the Children Norway. From 2024, our contribution is earmarked the education program "Transforming the Future" in Malawi, a project that will run through 2028.

Malawi is one of the world’s poorest countries, and there is a great need for improvements in the education system. For nearly 30 years, primary education has been free, and given the circumstances, a high number of children start school. However, in recent years, the quality of the learning environment and outcomes has declined, and many children are not acquiring basic skills such as reading and arithmetic.

“Education saves children’s lives and gives them the opportunity to build a future for themselves and their families,” says Anna-Elisabeth Flinstad, Partnership Manager at Save the Children Norway.

Their focus is on ensuring that the most vulnerable and at-risk children in Malawi receive schooling and have a better life. The goal is for all children to learn, develop, and be protected in an inclusive school environment with well-qualified teachers.

Schools are also not sufficiently adapted for children with special needs and disabilities. Most of the schools lack teachers who are qualified to assist children with such needs, as well as infrastructure and learning systems adapted for children with disabilities.

Save the Children actively works with students, parents, schools, and local authorities to build knowledge and awareness around accommodations for those with extra needs.

In 2024, more than 300 children received adapted equipment such as glasses, wheelchairs, and shoes.

The support from Lerøy contributes to the project’s goal of giving 280,000 children better learning outcomes and access to quality education.

The funds help provide training for 4,000 teachers in child-friendly pedagogy and effective teaching techniques, ensure relevant and quality teaching materials, promote inclusion in schools, and contribute to reducing child marriage and teenage pregnancies. Additionally, it helps abolish corporal punishment in schools and increases engagement and participation from parents and the local community.

“We are seeing many positive results in the project despite major challenges. The students have improved in reading, writing, and math, and they feel safer at school,” says Anna-Elisabeth.

A Call to Action

Being able to help Save the Children support others is an honor for Lerøy. Regardless of how big or small a donation is, the impact can be invaluable for those who receive it. We therefore encourage everyone who is able to make a charitable contribution to an organization that helps others.
